Cats tail half removed/ how to keep her from licking it so it can heal?

You take her to the vet to have it repaired. It will need to have surgery to remove the exposed bone and to suture the skin shut over the wound. How would you feel if you had a piece of your spine sticking out for over a month. It will not heal on its own and you should feel horrible that you left it like that for so long!
