Fired. Do I still get my commission?

My husband was fired from his job a few days ago. They get quarterly commission checks if they sale over a certain percentage. He had his biggest commission check since he started and gets it next month. Now that he is fired, the boss said he will not be getting it. Is this legal since the money was owed to him or no because he was fired? thanks
